I still hate you lucky “people” over there who get the Avant’s. We here in ‘Merica get one or two random imports. At least if you lost this one over there you could probably find another. Did you?

Sadly no.

But I had a swap kit that I was going to slide in.

The car was solid though, Ohlins, full exhaust etc. The swap was the last thing on the “To do” list

I think you’re confusing this for an RS4.

I got a ‘95 S6 now.

Someone in my office building drives a silver one. It’s always dirty and wheels are curb rashed. I want to SAVE IT!

I 100000% know those feels.

People keep bitching and moaning about how bad 2.7t reliability is without ever owning one. People keep them running for a reason and that’s because of how awesome they are.

Also, how much would that manual swap cost that you were going to do to it?

I’ll get another soon enough.

Well, it all depends. Im a big DIY’r So it would have all been home brew. I learned to tune** just for the swap. Besides that, its just making a harness for the revers lights, and runing the master/slave lines etc.

The cost of parts all depends on what you want, in terms of condition/age. I dropped coin for the transmission since it was built, but the rest was used stuff bought as a package deal. I think the total was at about 2.2k and change for everything: 6mt ($1500), rs4 clutch (used), shift linkages/box, drive shaft, axles, rear diff, and pedal assembly.

(**I have forgoten all but the basics lol)

Same. I miss mine every day I drive the VW.

I’d love to do it myself, but I don’t really have too much space at the moment.

Wait. Am I to understand that you are actually less sad that it is the twin-turbo six?!

Are you familiar with the 2.7T, or is “8 > 6" all that you’re basing this off of?

Kinja'd!!! BeaterGT > Jake Girardet

Yes, and both.

Hmm... Fascinating.

I mean, the 4.2 certainly isn’t a bad engine, but it always seemed so. . . ordinary, compared to the 2.7T.

To be clear, I am definitely not one of those people that thinks forced induction is always better than natural aspiration (it isn’t), or that eight cylinder engines are somehow lame (they aren’t). But there aren’t many engines out there that can produce more than double the stock-rated amount of both horsepower and torque, with zero internal work being done to the block or rotating assembly. There are even fewer that can operate in that fashion for 100,000+ miles without needing anything more than the factory-specified, routine maintenance. Ever since I first learned that the 2.7T possessed that sort of potential, I have considered it worthy of being counted among the most impressive mass-produced engines for road-going vehicles (such a list, in my opinion, would also include the BMW S54, the Toyota 2JZ, and the Mitsubishi 4G63, just to name a few).

Full Disclosure: I have been daily driving a modified B5 S4 (sedan, 6-speed) for almost four years now, so I fully recognize that I may very well just be biased; but, to be fair, I longed for one for years before finally getting one, and the appeal has not worn off, even after all this time. In fact, I honestly didn’t expect to be this happy with it this many years later. I continually find myself disappointed with newer vehicles, and I think a big part of the reason why is the way that engine delivers its power. To this day, it is the only turbocharged vehicle I have ever been in that can briskly accelerate from a steady cruising speed of 65 MPH without shifting out of sixth gear (~2,100 RPM). The torque is simply incredible.

But, to each their own, I suppose!
